Toy collecting is a favorite hobby of Dr. Ray, a Gallatin native. He received his medical degree from the University of Tennessee Medical School and completed his internship and residency in internal medicine at the University of Tennessee Affiliated Program at Baptist Hospital, where he served as Chief Resident. Dr. Ray holds a B.S. degree in microbiology from the University of Alabama at Huntsville.

He is certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine, and is a member of the American Medical Association, the American Academy of Family Physicians, and the American College of Physicians. He also serves as an adjunct instructor of Medicine at Vanderbilt University and the University of Tennessee program at Baptist Hospital.
