\nGo to the Emergency Room if you are experiencing any of the following symptoms: severe headache, localized weakness or numbness or blurred vision.
\nCare at home for mild symptoms. Here is what you can do: Drink plenty of fluids, especially sports drinks or clear soups. Eat bland foods (crackers, toast, scrambled eggs, apple sauce).

Prior to accepting the role of CMO, Dr. Gentuso practiced Internal Medicine here at Heritage Medical Associates. A graduate of the University of Massachusetts Medical School, he completed a residency in Internal Medicine and Pediatrics at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. He is a Fellow of the American College of Physicians, and a Certified Physician Executive through the American Association for Physician Leadership.

Heritage Women's Center does not accept TennCare/Medicaid in any form. If TennCare/Medicaid becomes your primary or secondary insurance at any time during your pregnancy, we will not be able to continue as your provider.
\nUnlike other types of medical services, obstetric care is billed globally, and will be billed at the end of your pregnancy, and will be billed at the end of your pregnancy once you deliver. The global fee includes routine visits, delivery charges, and the six week postpartum visit. Please note that this is the physician’s obstetric fee only and does not include hospital fees. Please verify with your insurance company that Ascension Saint Thomas Hospital Midtown or TriStar Centennial Medical Center are in network with your plan.
\nDuring your pregnancy, providers may order other services such as:
\nThese services are billed to your insurance at the time of service, and are not included in the global care fee. Additionally, the same will apply if you are seen for any problem or condition unrelated to your pregnancy. You may be responsible for a copay, co-insurance and/or deductible for these types of services.
\nCosts not covered by your insurance include form completion such as disability and FMLA paperwork. Please note that you are responsible for confirming the length of time you require for FMLA on your paperwork and with the office. If this information is not communicated, it will be assumed as 6-8 weeks. The fee for form completion is $25.00+ depending on the number of forms, complexity and frequent edits. This fee will be collected at the time you receive your completed forms from the office.
\nYou will be asked to pay an initial OB deposit of $125.00. This will go towards your amount due. Pre-payment for obstetric care is required and will be based on your current year’s benefits.
\nThe total must be paid, in full, prior to your 24th week visit using the payment plan. NO EXCEPTIONS. You should receive this estimate around your 12th week in which you will be ask to sign the estimate. Please note this should be paid with personal debit or credit card, if you use a FSA card you will not be reimbursed until after the delivery. If you are alone with the infant give two (2) minutes of CPR before calling 911. If another person is available, have that person call 911 or the local emergency number while you begin CPR.

The Heritage Medical Associates Pediatrics Department's main goal is to develop a relationship with children, young adults and their families to assist in all pediatric needs from birth through young adulthood. We understand that you will have questions along the way. If you can not find an answer to your question in the list below, please contact our main offices to speak directly with one of our professional staff members or to schedule a consultation.
\nA: We are always available for our patients in the event of an emergency. We encourage parents to contact the office and inform us of the situation so we can best define a plan of care. We care for many emergent needs (such as asthma exacerbations, lacerations, etc.) in the office, so a phone call can help us to prepare for an emergent visit.
\nWeekend Visits are available by appointment only at the following locations:
\nA: Our dedicated team of general pediatricians offers preventive and primary care covering a wide range of services, including but not limited to well-baby/well-child visits, sick visits, immunizations and vaccinations, sports physicals, special needs, acute care, diagnostic and treatment services, prenatal consultations and health screenings.
\nA: We immunize our patients as recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics. These guidelines are revised every year and represent the suggested practice of the thought leaders on Pediatric Infectious Diseases. We are committed to protecting children from preventable diseases. We feel that families who choose to not immunize their children would be better served by a different Pediatric practice.
\nA: Please call your pediatrician's office during regular business hours to schedule a sick visit. We want to understand your child's symptoms and will recommend next steps to best address their illness. In the event of an emergency, please notify the receptionist that you are calling with an emergent need. For an urgent after-hours concern, please contact the on-call doctor through the answering service by calling your pediatrician's number.
\nA: We encourage that non-urgent concerns be discussed during the daytime, as the office is open and we can provide prompt care both in person and over the phone.
\nIn the event of an urgent need after office hours, you may access your physician at home by calling your pediatrician's number. We will promptly return your call and help define a plan for your child’s problem. If necessary, we will meet you at the office or direct you to the appropriate emergency setting. If you have not been called back within 30 minutes, there has been an error in our notification. Please call again.
\nA: We recommend regular preventive and wellness visits to monitor and maintain the general health, growth and development of your child. There are nine preventative care visits during the first two years of life and one visit yearly thereafter. Due to our continuity model, we may address concerns at sick visits as well, as these represent opportunities to follow up on concerns that were discussed during preventative care visits.

\nA: Newborns cannot receive many vaccines until 2-6 months of age. Some of the protection from the vaccines that you get is transferred to your baby during pregnancy. This helps protect your baby from illness during the first months of life.
\nQ: How do I know what vaccines I need?
\nA: Discuss the vaccines that you have had with your health care provider. Your health care provider will recommend the vaccines you need based on your medical history and lifestyle. If you do not receive recommended vaccines during pregnancy, you should get them immediately after your baby is born.
\nQ: Are vaccines safe for me? Are vaccines safe for my baby?
\nA: Vaccination is one of the most important things that you can do for yourself and your baby. Vaccines help protect you and your baby from diseases that you both are at risk of and can make you both seriously ill. Vaccination is safe for you and your baby. For example, flu vaccines have been given safely to millions of pregnant women for more than 50 years.
\nQ: I have heard that some vaccines contain mercury. Is getting these vaccines during pregnancy safe for my baby?
\nA: Thimerosal, a type of mercury, has not been shown to be harmful to pregnant women or unborn babies, and it does not cause autism. The benefits of preventing life-threatening illnesses in a mother and child far outweigh any potential risks of the vaccine.
\nQ: I am pregnant. Is it recommended to receive the inactivated influenza vaccine (flu shot)?
\nA: Yes. Flu shots are an effective and safe way to protect you and your baby from serious illness and complications of the flu. The flu shot given during pregnancy helps protect infants younger than 6 months who are too young to be vaccinated and have no other way of receiving influenza antibodies. The flu shot has been given to millions of pregnant women over many years, and flu shots have been shown to be safe for pregnant women and their babies.
\nQ: During which trimester is it safe to have a flu shot?
\nA: The flu shot is recommended for pregnant women and can be given at any time during pregnancy. Pregnant women are advised to get vaccinated as soon as possible and to speak to their health care providers about being immunized.
\nWhich flu vaccine should pregnant women receive?
\nA: Pregnant women should receive the flu shot, which is given with a needle, usually in the arm. The Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices and the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (the College) recommend that pregnant should receive this vaccine.
\nQ: Will the flu shot give me the flu?
\nA: No, you cannot get the flu from receiving the flu vaccine.
\nQ: Is there a flu vaccine that pregnant women should not receive?
\nA: Yes. Pregnant women should not receive the nasal spray vaccine, which is made with the live flu virus. The nasal spray vaccine is safe for women after they have given birth, even if they are breastfeeding, and for family members.
\nQ: Are preservative in influenza vaccines safe my baby?
\nA: Yes. The type of preservative (eg. thimerosal) used in trace amounts in some vaccines has not been shown to be harmful to a pregnant woman or her baby. Some women may be concerned about exposure to preservatives during pregnancy. Single-dose influenza vaccines that contain a mercury-free preservative are available through some manufactures. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the College recommend that pregnant women may receive the inactivated influenza vaccine with or without thimerosal.
\nQ: What else can I do to protect my baby against the flu?
\nA: Getting your flu shot is the most important step in protecting yourself and your baby against the flu. In addition, breastfeeding and making sure other gamily members and caregivers receive the flu vaccine will further protect your baby.
\nQ: I am breastfeeding my baby. Is it safe to get vaccinated?
\nA: Yes. Influenza vaccines can be given to breastfeeding mothers if they were not immunized when they were pregnant. Breastfeeding women can receive either the flu shot or the nasal spray. Breastfeeding women pass antibodies through breast milk, which may also reduce the infant’s chances of getting sick with the flu.
\nQ: What is pertussis?
\nA: Pertussis (also called whooping cough) is a highly contagious disease that causes severe coughing. People with pertussis may make a \"whooping\" sound when they try to breathe. In newborns, pertussis can be a life-threatening illness. It can be prevented with a vaccine called the tetanus toxoid, reduced diptheria toxoid and acellular pertussis (Tdap) vaccine.
\nQ: I am pregnant. Should I get a Tdap shot?
\nA: Yes, if you have never received a Tdap vaccine before, you should receive it late in your second trimester (ie, after 20 weeks of gestation ) or third trimester of pregnancy. The Tdap vaccine is an effective and safe way to protect you and your baby from serious illness and complications of pertussis.
\nQ: I am planning on becoming pregnant. Is it recommended that I receive a Tdap shot?

When you get emergency care or get treated by an out-of-network provider at an in-network hospital or ambulatory surgical center, you are protected from surprise billing or balance billing.
\nWhat is \"balance billing' (sometimes called \"surprise billing\")?
\nWhen you see a doctor or other health care provider, you may owe certain out-of-pocket costs, such as a copayment, coinsurance, and/or a deductible. You may have other costs or have to pay the entire bill if you see a provider or visit a health care facility that isn't in your health plan's network.
\n\"Out-of-network\" describes providers and facilities that haven't signed a contract with your health plan. Out-of-network providers may be permitted to bill you for the difference between what your plan agreed to pay and the full amount charged for a service. This is called \"balance billing.\" This amount is likely more than in-network costs for the same service and might not count toward your annual out-of-pocket limit.
\n\"Surprise billing\" is an unexpected balance bill. This can happen when you can't control who is involved in your care - like when you have an emergency or when you schedule a visit at an in-network facility but are unexpectedly treated by an out-of-network provider.
\nYou are protected from balance billing for:
\nEmergency services
\nIf you have an emergency medical condition and get emergency services from an out-of-network provider or facility, the most the provider or facility may bill you is your plan's in-network cost-sharing amount (such as copayments and coinsurance). You can't be balance billed for these emergency services. This includes services you may get after you're in stable condition, unless you give written consent and give up your protections not to be balanced billed for these post-stabilization services.
\nCertain services at an in-network hospital or ambulatory surgical center
\nWhen you get services from an in-network hospital or ambulatory surgical center, certain providers there may be out-of-network. In these cases, the most those providers may bill you is your plan's in-network cost-sharing amount. This applies to emergency medicine, anesthesia, pathology, radiology, laboratory, neonatology, assistant surgeon, hospitalist or intensivist services. These providers can't balance bill you and may not ask you to give up your protections not to be balance billed.
\nIf you get other services at these in-network facilities, out-of-network providers can't balance bill you, unless you give written consent and give up your protections.
\nYou're never required to give up your protections from balance billing. You also aren't required to get care out-of-network. You can choose a provider or facility in your plan's network.

\nContact your child's physician if: illness lasts more than 2 days, if child has blood in diarrhea, or if you cannot bring fever below 101 degrees.
\nGo to the Emergency Room if child is experiencing any of the following symptoms: persistent abdominal pain or signs of dehydration: dizziness, sunken eyes, poor muscle or skin tone.
\nCare at home for mild symptoms. Here is what you can do: offer plenty of fluids and use OTC medicines for children age 4 and older (expectorants with guaifenesin, cough suppressants with dextromethorphan).

\nCare at home for mild symptoms. Here is what you can do: increase fluid intake. Give acetaminophen (or ibuprofen if older than 6 months).
\nContact your child's physician if: you are unable to bring fever below 103 degrees with acetaminophen or ibuprofen, if newborn (under 2 months) has fever over 100.4 degrees, if child has fever lasting more than 5 days, or if child has fewer than 4 wet diapers per day.
\nGo to the Emergency Room if child is experiencing any of the following symptoms: confused/lethargic, severe headache with vomiting or stiff neck, seizure, or difficulty breathing.
\nCare at home for mild symptoms. Here is what you can do: increase fluid intake. For infants: consider small amounts of apple, prune, or pear juice in addition to normal feedings or introducing pureed peas or prunes. If necessary, add a Glycerin suppository.
\nContact your child's physician if: infant has infrequent hard stool or abdominal distension, or if child has not improved with at home care measures.
\nGo to the Emergency Room if child is experiencing any of the following symptoms: pain or vomiting.
\nCare at home for mild symptoms. Here is what you can do: Use Calamine lotion for contact dermatitis or aloe lotion for sunburn. Introduce a lukewarm oatmeal bath to soothe itchy rashes or Popsicles to soothe mouth sores. Ibuprofen can be used for sunburns.
\nContact your child's physician if: child has a fever over 101 degrees or if child has mouth sores or rash that impairs eating or drinking.
\nGo to the Emergency Room if child is experiencing any of the following symptoms: generalized and/or blistering rash.

For care at home, here is what you can do: take prescribed controller/rescue medications, avoid cigarette smoke and other irritants, and treat asthma triggers like allergies or URI symptoms.
\nContact your child's physician if: child has persistent daily nighttime cough, child uses rescue medication more than 2x/week or more frequently than normal, or child has shortness of breath, wheezing or cough during exercise.
\nGo to the Emergency Room if child is experiencing any of the following symptoms: confusion/drowsiness, worsening breathing interferes with eating or playing, or wheezing/breathing problems despite rescue medications.
\nFor care at home, here is what you can do: wear a medical alert bracelet, monitor blood sugar, and take prescribed medications.
\nContact your child's physician if: child has increased thirst, nausea/vomiting, trembling/weakness, persistently elevated blood sugar, recurrently low blood sugar.

\nOur pediatric offices have cared for Middle Tennessee families since 1951, when Dr. Luthur A. Beazley, M.D. opened the practice on Old Lebanon Road. From newborn checkups to teen physicals, our team has always been there for the everyday moments and the ones that need extra care. Dr. William Wadlington, M.D. and Dr. Bill Doak, M.D. joined in 1958 and 1960, and over seven decades the practice has grown to 16 board-certified pediatricians.
